A study of individuals at high-risk for STDs in Peru found that syphilis was common, difficult to treat in those with low RPR titers, and highly associated with HIV infection. The high rate of re-infection and low rate of partner treatment demonstrated by this study underscore the need for effective partner notification and treatment strategies to combat the spread of HIV and other STDs.
